SAB urges continuous dialogue in safe booze push - safe booze
SAB, South Africa’s largest brewer, highlighted that harmful alcohol use strains families and community services.

The safe booze campaign launched by South Africa’s largest brewer stresses that dialogue on alcohol responsibility must continue beyond a single event, according to Lisa, vice-president of corporate affairs at SAB.

Harmful alcohol consumption strains families, burdens community services and heightens pressure on health and safety resources across the country.

Regulation alone cannot solve the problem; effective implementation and local insight are needed to identify interventions that actually reduce harm.

During SAB’s recent “Cheers to responsibility week,” the brewer convened two separate gatherings to explore these issues in depth. The events were designed to translate dialogue into measurable outcomes.

Stakeholder Forums Highlight Key Issues

The first session, held at Wits University, examined how responsible marketing influences consumer choices and what standards could curb excessive consumption. Participants reviewed case studies that showed how marketing guidelines can be adjusted to lower risky drinking patterns.

A second forum brought together government officials, police, academics, civil-society groups and industry representatives, with input from Georgetown University and global AB InBev colleagues, to discuss partnerships for safer roads. Organisers said the mix of viewpoints creates a platform for turning discussion into concrete action.

SAB Sharp’s Concrete Investments

Addressing drinking and driving requires more than a simple warning; education, reliable transport options, visible enforcement and the ability to collect evidence are all essential.

Through the SAB Sharp programme, it has supported the creation of 34 alcohol evidence centres nationwide and has invested more than R52 million in those centres and related roadblocks.

Path Forward for Responsible Practices

Commitments to responsible marketing must translate into everyday decisions about target audiences, message tone and how moderation is portrayed.

Ongoing attention is required for responsibility to become embedded in industry operations rather than remaining a stated principle.

Law-enforcement officers can pinpoint where processes break down, community organisations can explain trust challenges, and retailers can describe the realities of applying responsible-trading standards.

Industry participants are expected to share evidence, respond to criticism and cooperate with independent research and public scrutiny.

Expanding successful interventions calls for regular conversations that focus on evidence-backed approaches, understand why they work and determine what is needed to broaden their reach.

Replicating an initiative in new areas is not a simple copy-paste; it demands funding, local partnerships, clear accountability and willingness to adjust when results fall short.

SAB plans to keep contributing through SAB Sharp’s three pillars, educate, enforce and innovate, recognising that reducing harmful consumption requires long-term effort and collaboration.

The ultimate measure of these discussions will be better policy decisions, stronger enforcement and measurable reductions in alcohol-related harm, indicating that the safe booze campaign is making a tangible contribution.
