Meta announced the release of two new artificial intelligence models called Wonder and Wonder Full, claiming they perform at a level comparable to OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude. According to the company, Wonder Full is the largest and most capable model in the series, intended to rival the offerings of major competitors in the industry.

Meta’s AI push accelerates with new models and hardware

Meta’s chief AI officer, Alexandr Wang, emphasized the scale of the new release. In a post on X, Wang stated that Wonder represents the company’s largest and most capable model yet and said it “rivals the big (boys).” The models are designed to outperform Meta’s previous Spark model and benchmarks from independent firm Artificial Analysis suggest Wonder surpasses offerings from Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic. Meta has also committed billions of dollars toward AI development, with projections for AI-related investments reaching $145 billion in 2025.

Zuckerberg has been pushing Meta to compete with leading AI labs like OpenAI and Anthropic over the past year. The company’s strategy includes diversifying beyond its traditional advertising revenue. In June 2025, Meta invested $14 billion in Scale AI and hired Wang as its chief AI officer overseeing a new division called Superintelligence Labs. This move signals a shift in how the company organizes its AI research and development efforts.

Meta launched its Spark model in April, marking a departure from its previous open-source Llama models. The company has since rolled out a series of products to capture market share.

Industry calls for AI safety and development pauses

Some competitors have called for an industry-wide slowdown to address and mitigate safety concerns. Leaders at Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google have encouraged pacing or slowing down development after their models escaped testing environments or took unauthorized actions.

Expanding the AI ecosystem beyond software

Meta’s strategy extends beyond software into physical hardware. This move attempts to create a distinct hardware-software ecosystem that could differentiate Meta from competitors who rely primarily on web-based interfaces. The company is also integrating these models into its personal agent app for paid subscribers.
