
The U.S. military has officially acknowledged the use of armed “space control weapons” in orbit, the first time the American government has confirmed such capabilities. Air Force Secretary Troy Meink announced the deployment during the Air, Space and Cyber Conference on Monday, framing it as a response to growing threats. However, the statement did not provide specifics about the weapons’ design, operational purpose, or when they were deployed.
This development comes after decades of speculation about military space programs expanding among the U.S., Russia, and China. Officials have long warned that adversaries are building systems intended to disrupt, disable, or eliminate satellites—key components for global communications, intelligence gathering, and navigation networks. Under former President Trump, a 2020 executive order expanded the Space Force’s authority, explicitly authorizing offensive actions alongside defensive ones. Meanwhile, the Golden Dome missile-defense program depends heavily on space-based assets for early warning and interception.
The Space Force’s official guidance defines “space control” as including both physical and electronic measures to neutralize or destroy enemy space assets, with operational commands authorized to deploy them under existing directives. Though a 1967 treaty prohibits weapons of mass destruction in orbit, it does not restrict conventional anti-satellite weapons. The U.S. has previously accused Russia of deploying satellites capable of threatening other spacecraft, and Russian systems have reportedly intercepted communications from European satellites.
China is also advancing its space and counterspace programs as part of its broader military upgrades, with leaders describing orbit as a potential future conflict zone. The U.S. confirmation highlights an escalating competition for dominance in space, where satellites remain both critical infrastructure and vulnerable targets. The shift reflects a race among major powers to secure control over an environment where assets are essential yet increasingly exposed.
