BEL shares dip 3% despite dividend payout

Bharat Electronics Limited shares dropped nearly 3% on May 20 after the state-owned defense contractor released its fourth-quarter results for fiscal year 2026. The decline occurred despite earnings that matched market expectations and a final dividend announcement of ₹0.55 per share for the year.

The stock traded at ₹411.05 on the Bombay Stock Exchange, down 2.86% from the previous close. Its market capitalization was ₹3,00,505 crore, with the day’s low reaching ₹410.80.

Quarterly earnings meet estimates, annual growth steady

BEL posted a net profit of ₹2,203.16 crore for the January-March quarter, an increase from ₹2,104.78 crore in the same period last year. Revenue climbed to ₹10,177.17 crore, up from ₹9,119.71 crore in Q4 FY25.

For the full fiscal year, net profit rose 14.4% to ₹6,048.48 crore, while revenue grew 16.15% to ₹27,479.63 crore. The order book as of April 1, 2026, stood at ₹73,882 crore.

Analysts at JM Financial noted that BEL’s earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization reached ₹29.6 billion, a 6% year-over-year increase. The EBITDA margin of 29.1% matched JM Financial’s estimate of 29.2% but exceeded broader market expectations of 28.3%. Order inflows for the quarter were ₹300 billion, 60% higher than the previous year and above guidance of ₹270 billion.

The earnings call scheduled for May 20 would provide clarity on BEL’s order inflow guidance for FY27 and margin outlook. JM Financial maintained its ADD rating on the stock, valuing it at 44 times FY28 earnings per share and setting a target price of ₹485.

Analysts split on rating despite strong fundamentals

While most brokerages remained optimistic, Equirus Securities lowered its rating to REDUCE. The firm acknowledged the strong margin performance but raised concerns over the order book-to-trailing-twelve-month sales ratio, which fell to 2.7x. Equirus set a target price of ₹405.

Despite the mixed views, the broader analyst consensus stayed positive. Of 27 analysts tracked, most recommended a BUY on BEL shares.

The ₹0.55 per share dividend payout requires shareholder approval at the upcoming annual general meeting. BEL has a history of rewarding shareholders, with 52 dividends declared since August 2003. Over the past 12 months, total dividend payouts reached ₹2.85 per share, yielding 0.68% at current prices.

BEL has also issued bonus shares three times, most recently in September 2022 at a 2:1 ratio. Its only stock split occurred in 2017, when the face value was reduced from ₹10 to ₹1.

The earnings call later in the day might clarify whether the company expects to maintain its growth.
